Issues Impacting Our Schools

We have a lot to celebrate in Harris County, but when it comes to our public schools there is work to be done. These are the issues I will focus my time and energy on while serving on the school board.

Academic Excellence

In grades 3-8, the results of STAAR testing indicated that our children have not recouped Pre-Pandemic levels.  Not one grade reached 50% in the category Meets Grade Level expectations. In grades 3-8 reading testing students did somewhat better.  All grades reached the 50%iles  with the exception of the 6th grade (42%) It is not acceptable for Texas students to barely meet 50%iles in reading.

What is Texas’ answers to these scores? The state decided STAARS might be too hard and now they are piloting new testing options. This is not the answer.

Testing data for Special Education students on the STAARS testing indicates this population scored between 23% and 30% over the past four years. This group suffered the greatest losses.

I have not seen  evidence of extra teaching time scheduled to improve these scores or different teaching methods. The District worked on 5 year goals, but are these goals aggressive enough? Our District ranking was low so the TEA revised how the rankings were derived and then our ranking improved greatly. Changing the rankings and testing is delusional and doing a disservice to our kids. We must concentrate on improving our academic performance because every child deserves to reach their potential. Our District must work for Academic Excellence.

Staffing Shortages

The school year started with approximately 860 teacher shortage and over 400 substitute teacher shortage. In December, there were still over 400 teachers needed.  The District and State must have certified teachers in every academic classroom. Creative ways need to be explored.  With a growing population in Houston, the state needs to revisit out-of-state license requirements and re-hiring retired teachers.

Parental Rights

I hold a strong belief in the family unit and their role in education. We used to encourage parents to be a vital part of their children’s education. Parental Rights is a natural part of family values. Parents have the right to monitor what their children read and learn. Parents used to be invited into the classrooms to help with activities. The school was a place where parents were encouraged to be a vital part of the community.

Parents and teachers should work together for the best outcome for children in order for all children to reach their potential. Parents are entitled to full information regarding learning and school activities. The school does not have the right to withhold information. I believe in transparency
